Many people visiting our show come a great distance to see some of the best boats in North America, We are also blessed with one of the best places to run these beautiful boats. Sunday was a tour of two outstanding cottages, with a lunch and award ceremony at the Beaumaris Club. Then a Group from the Michigan Chapter asked to be guided on a larger tour of the lakes on Monday.
I was happy to meet some new friends and go for a boat ride. We started on Lake Muskoka in a cool wind with a hard chop, We went thought the islands of Keewaydin and the Seven Sisters, over the sunken mail ship Waome and then past the Indian head seen in the natural rock formation on Idlewylde island then off the locks of Port Carling.
Port Carling has many points of interest from the location of Port carling boat works, and the Disappearing Propeller Boat, to John Matheson and the still standing Dukes Boat shop, Thanks to Ed Skinner our small group got to go thru this shop which is like stepping into the past. Ed has kept the shop in its original condition with very few modifications. Its always a treat to see.
We had lunch and a visit to the large mural depicting the Steam ship Sagamo which upon closer examination is made up of many smaller photos of port carlings past.
We then went up through the locks built in the 1870s into Lake Rosseau the sun had come out and the wind had died down and the day was turning out to be a good one for a cruise. Out on the lake we pass Tobin Island and see the beautifully grand hotel Windermere built in 1883. We continued north around Tobin Island seeing the many wonderful boat houses including one that was built in 1915 for the one and only sail boat built by Bert Minett. This building is 35 feet tall to accommodate the mast of a sail boat.
We then headed back to lake Muskoka and across to North Bay for a look and the home of the Petersons. Our late Friend Gerry was a great host to this group in the past and a visit to this part of the lake was to honor and remember him for his contributions and friendship to the many classic boaters he has touched over the years.
I would like the thanks the Michigan Chapter for sending such a wonderful group to participate in our boat show. I was more then happy to go for a boat ride and guide you though our waters.
