I thought our fellow boaters might like to see a picture of this famous yacht, which we were fortunate to see while in Cuba recently.
It was custom built for Ernest Hemingway in 1934 by the Wheeler shipyard in Brooklyn, N.Y. It is 40 feet long and powered by a Chrysler Marine 6 cylinder which appears to be of the 125 horsepower size.
Pilar was a nickname for his first wife (of four) Pauline.
The boat is slowly being restored. Lack of money is the current issue. A group in the USA had promised assistance but new regulations courtesy George Bush have hampered the project.
Notwithstanding, it is in pretty good shape at present.
The boat, and Hemingway's estate on the same property, are worth a visit if you are in the area. The location is about 16 K. southeast of Havana. |
