Classic boaters from all over North America gathered at Lake Tahoe, the location of this year's International meeting. Lake Tahoe sits at 6300ft above sea level, a basin surrounded by mountains. The view was spectacular. Arriving, the weather was in the 80's and the lake was calm ready for boating. The lake is approximately 22 x 12 miles long. With an average depth of 900-ft., and 1600-ft in the deep spots, you are not recovering any thing you drop. The water is a beautiful clear blue with 80-ft visibility. With all this, who would not want to come for a visit?
The pre-events were sold out. The Northern California/Lake Tahoe chapter did an outstanding job of accommodating the large group of site see-errs. Two days of boating before the AGM made for a great trip. The first ride was to Emerald Bay. This was a 5hour trip with a stop in the bay for lunch. We counted over 35 beautiful boats pulled up on the beach and floating in the bay. What a site for me eyes. The lobster feed in the barn was a huge success. Our second trip was to see Thunderbird Lodge the estate of George Whittell Jr. and his custom built 1939 55-ft, John Hacker-designed "Thunderbird". We had a great tour of the buildings and grounds. Lunch was served on the front lawn over looking the lake. With no wind and 80 degree weather we had a couple of grand trips.
Thursday was the day of meetings as this is the AGM part of the event. We (the Toronto Club) were honored with privilege to host the event in Muskoka for 2009. ACBS International just celebrated the 31st anniversary in style, with hundreds of members and close to a 100 boats. Friday and Saturday was the boat show in the last five years this event has been a great bonus in getting more people involved. The annual meetings have proven to be an enormous success due to this change.
Next year the meeting is in Lake George. This is sure to be another fantastic event.
